What is Music Technology?
Strictly speaking, music technology is defined as any technology that a musician can use to make music. However, more commonly it is regarded as being the use of a computer to assist in the creation of music, typically within a recording studio environment.
Today music technology lies at the heart of nearly every professional studio. Computers have revolutionized the way music is written and recorded whether it be orchestral, rock, pop, world music, hip-hop or any other genre of music.
By using a computer, powerful software and recording equipment including microphones, mixer and keyboards you have access to thousands of sampled real instruments and sounds for creating music, transforming the ideas within our minds into something we can hear.
The computer acts as a musical tool. In the same way that word processing software has made writing easier, music sequencing software has put musical composition within reach. With practice, music technology makes it possible to compose in a way previously unimaginable, not least because in times gone by there would have been no way to hear the full creation without access to an orchestra or a band to play it back to you.
Music is woven into the fabric of almost all media forms today, and composers of music, whether it be for records, TV, films or games, use music technology to develop ideas. This allows us to hear their compositions, often without a single note being played by an actual orchestra or band. In the same way that music technology helps professionals to compose, it allows everyone else to start creating music as well, no matter what their musical background.
